Waterford MP Shannon Fentiman has made yet another election commitment as the state election on 26 October draws closer, this time promising a lighting upgrade for a local park.
A “better, brighter future” for Gould Adams Park would see a $300,000 upgrade to its lighting system.
It’s hoped the new lighting would make the park safer and more functional, allowing the community to continue playing night-time sports, especially soccer, which is the predominant sport played there.
Gould Adams Park is used for a variety of events and by several community organisations, including human services not-for-profit Settlement Services International (SSI), which hosts its Multicultural Sports Club there.
SSI general manager and Queensland director Robert Hoitink welcomed Ms Fentiman’s commitment.
“The club provides a fun, inclusive soft entry into sport through a range of participation and development opportunities targeted at young people,” Mr Hoitink said.
“New lighting will allow the club to grow the services on offer and run more evening games while keeping costs minimal for community members.”
A local soccer player, Shay Deng, said he loved playing the sport.
“But at nighttime training we can’t see clearly,” he said.
Local councillor Teresa Lane also welcomed the funding.
“Locals are happy when all levels of government work together to deliver the facilities their kids need to get active in sport and progress to higher levels,” Cr Lane said.
“The installation of these higher-grade lights will allow SSI to host club senior football matches on the site.”
Mr Fentiman said Gould Adams Park was a cornerstone of the Waterford community, playing a crucial role in engaging people of all ethnicities and ages through sport.
“This park isn’t just a place to play—it’s a place for connection, belonging, and support,” she said.
“This is about listening to what our community needs and delivering it.”
This promise follows a string of others by Ms Fentiman ahead of the October election, including the construction of two satellite hospitals at Beenleigh and Yarrabilba.
She also committed to funding a security fencing upgrade for Loganholme State School.
