Food of the future

A coming food crisis? Are you prepared?

Practical Aquaponics is a small, family-owned and -run business based in North Maclean.  Our main purpose is to promote aquaponics by providing courses, greenhouse tours, and equipment.

Aquaponics is a food-production method that combines crops and fish in a created, balanced ecosystem.  It is highly productive, organic, and extremely water-wise.  Since starting the company in 2006, owner and operator Murray Hallam has become a world-wide expert in the field.

In the 12 years that Practical Aquaponics has been running courses, we have taught over 2000 students from nearly 200 countries around the world, some of whom have gone on to establish highly successful businesses in aquaponics, both in large-scale commercial farming and in the design and construction of farms.

Each course takes students from the basics of aquaponics, through home-scale systems, and all the way up to farm-size design and operation. Students routinely provide excellent feedback.

Murray also works in aquaponics farm design and oversight; for example, an aquaponics farm that he designed and helped build for a remote Indigenous community.

As well as the general public, the company also caters to school groups interested in aquaponics.  Tours of their greenhouses are always a highlight, and can cover several different aspects of the curriculum, especially STEM subjects.

The company’s social media presence is always growing, with over 680,000 Facebook followers with the online course (Aquaponics Design Course) and over 20,000 followers on their Instagram account.  And Murray’s YouTube videos are always popular, with over a million views.

The company believes aquaponics is the food-production method of the future.  Pure food.  Locally grown.  Locally owned.  The benefits are immense, for health and for the environment.  It ticks all the boxes.
