Family ties and fists fly in boxing

Owner and head coach of Team Taylor Boxing, Greg Taylor has dedicated his life to the sport of boxing.

Starting at just seven years old in New South Wales, Taylor’s boxing journey progressed from amateur fights to sparring for prominent fighters.

After relocating to Queensland, he began coaching alongside the late Georgie Mills at the Browns Plains Boxing Club, where he mentored young talent.

After a break due to work commitments, Mr Taylor returned to the boxing scene, rekindling his passion for the sport and focusing on coaching.

“I’ve always loved doing it,” he said.

“Watching kids and adults progress, seeing them grow and develop—there’s nothing quite like it.”

Now running Team Taylor Boxing, Mr Taylor’s main focus is on building a strong foundation for his fighters, teaching them discipline, respect, and the art of boxing.

His two sons, Boden and Kody, have already made a name for themselves in the sport, having started their boxing journey just seven months ago.

Their passion and drive for the sport seem ingrained, with Mr Taylor acknowledging the influence of boxing running in the family.

“I think it’s in their blood,” he said.

“I’ve got my daughter training now too, and she’s already throwing punches like she’s been doing it for years.”

Mr Taylor’s commitment to the sport extends beyond his immediate family.

He has also been involved in training underprivileged youth, particularly through the Gloves Up program, which works with Aboriginal children.

By offering free training and mentorship, Taylor has witnessed the profound impact boxing can have on troubled youth.

“Boxing teaches them discipline and helps them release frustration,” he said.

“But the best part is that it also builds confidence and character.”

Looking ahead, Team Taylor Boxing is poised for a big year, with several of its fighters set to compete in novice titles and training camps, with an eye on the Golden Gloves in July.

Mr Taylor is also working on expanding the gym’s facilities to accommodate more athletes.

“I could fill the gym tomorrow with 30 people if I had the space,” he said.

“But we’re only new so we’ll keep training where we are now and hopefully find a new gym this year.”
