Drone deliveries launch from Hyperdome

A further nine suburbs will be able to receive drone delivery following last week’s launch pad reveal at Hyperdome Shopping Centre.

That takes the total number of suburbs receiving Wing deliveries.

Drones have been launched from the rooftop of Browns Plains Plaza, but last week’s launch potentially takes the service to thousands more homes.

The drone delivery service was the first of its kind to be launched – an Australia-first for the City of Logan.

The latest expansion will be a partnership with DoorDash and brings in suburbs including Slacks Creek, Meadowbrook, Loganlea, Edens Landing, Loganholme, Kingston, Beenleigh, Holmview, Tanah Merah, Shailer Park, Daisy Hill, Cornubia, Springwood, Waterford, Waterford West, Eagleby and Bethania.

Drone deliveries can be up to 1.2kg in weight are commonly used for fresh foods, medicines, household items and tools.

Business partners said the project aimed to leverage underutilised spaces as delivery hubs, bringing efficiencies for businesses that have chosen to be part of the project.

Not all Hyperdome businesses are delivering via drone. Those that have are listed on the Wing app.

“We’re grateful for the Logan City Council’s continued embrace of drone delivery, and support for innovation,” Wing spokesperson Jesse Suskin said.

Logan City Council has supported the project from the outset and has since borne the brunt of some complaints from residents who say the noise of the drones is upsetting.

“The City of Logan has been a frontrunner in adopting drone technology, and this new site demonstrates the increasing demand for a faster and sustainable delivery method,” Cr Jon Raven said.

“The Hyperdome shopping centre serves as a trade area to a population of over 220,000. This drone service will have a major impact on boosting the local economy, supporting local business growth, and increasing accessibility to local residents by extending the potential reach of the hundreds of stores located within the centre.”

Hyperdome Centre Manager, Brian Turner, said: “By bringing drone delivery to Hyperdome in Logan, we can help retailers harness another avenue of business while improving the shopping experience for our customers.”
