For 12 years, Eric Horder has been building an intricate model railway at his home in Logan Reserve.
At age 79, Mr Horder says it’s his finest work yet.
The detailed model, which Mr Horder built entirely by himself, can run four trains at any one time, creating a busy network inside a room designed to preserve the model set.
“Attention to detail is paramount,” Mr Horder said. “It took me so long because detail is really important.”
This is the third model train setup Mr Horder has constructed.
The first two were destroyed over time, prompting him to build a dustproof, air-conditioned room to properly store and protect his latest creation.
“You learn by the mistakes you make as you go along,” Mr Horder said. “This time it really worked out nicely.”
His interest in model trains began more than 60 years ago when he was still at school. What started as a childhood fascination grew into a lifelong hobby.
Mr Horder runs the trains himself and says coordinating multiple at once adds to the challenge.
Unlike simpler sets that run in a basic loop, his design features detailed scenery and carefully considered track work.
Mr Horder says he is not seeking recognition for his work, but hopes to connect with other enthusiasts across Logan.
He is offering spare materials, including miniature trees, buildings, paints, streetlights and coloured sawdust used to represent grass to anyone keen to take up the hobby.
To arrange a time to see the model train or pick up the spare materials at Mr Horder’s Logan Reserve residence, contact him by calling 0755470697.
“Anybody’s welcome to come around and have a look,” he said. “I just want to share with other people who are interested.”
