Logan City Council says fines are a “last resort” as property-owners are urged to ensure their pools comply with safety regulations.
Pool owners have a responsibility to comply with state regulations to keep children safe.
Logan’s planning chair councillor Jon Raven said fines were possible for non-compliance, but council preferred. education over penalties.
“If an issue is found, we want to support owners and help them to make their pool safe – fines are a last resort,” Cr Raven said.
He urged residents to ensure pool fencing and barriers met safety standards.
“When water is involved, tragedy can happen in an instant, as kids can be so quick to give adult supervision the slip,” Cr Raven said.
“But it’s avoidable with a few simple steps before we even think about swimming.”
Some of council’s tips include:
- Never lock or prop open pool gates
- Ensure pool gates are self-latching
- Always supervise children and put phones down
- Teach kids about pool safety
- Learn CPR
