Could solar panels increase the value of your home?

In a recent interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Chief of Research and Economics at Domain, Nicola Powell, said solar panels can significantly increase the value of a property.

Other economically sustainable features like double-glazed windows and heat recovery ventilation are uncommon in new builds but in demand, and can also significantly increase the value of a property.

According to the latest solar panel uptake data collected by the Queensland Government, the 4207 postcode, which includes the City of Logan suburbs, Bahr Scrubs, Bannockburn, Beenleigh, Logan Village and Eagleby, is ranked 6 in the state for solar panel uptake.

In the same postcode, 11,874 solar panels are currently installed on residential properties according to QLD Government data.

Raywhite Beenleigh estate agent Rob Tindall said about 70 percent of the properties he is currently selling have solar panels already installed.

“I am finding probably more and more that people are looking for solar on the property when they are buying,” Mr Tindall said.

Typically, solar is a cheaper energy option and can help residents looking to save money on high power bills, which Mr Tindall says is a concern for many buyers.

Determining how much solar panels increase a property’s value is more challenging to nail down.

“Does it impact the price? I think, yes, marginally. But solar panels are definitely still a major consideration for most when thinking about their weekly power bill,” he said.

“If a property has solar panels, it’s definitely helping them with that, combating expenses every week, that’s for sure.”

Statewide wide 1 in 3 homes have solar panels, a rate higher than any other Australian state or Territory.

In late 2022, the City of Logan was certified as carbon neutral by the Australian Government’s Climate Active Program. Over 2,000 kilowatts of solar panel systems installed on council facilities contributed significantly to receiving this certification.
