Coffee for breastfeeding mums

A local mobile cafe has introduced a unique lactation bundle to its menu, designed to increase milk production for breastfeeding mums.

Shot Box Café Owner, Amelia Herr is a mum of two and just recently added the ‘lactation bundle’ to her menu after noticing there wasn’t much out there for breastfeeding mums.

“I’ve been breastfeeding for about four years now, I have two young children and at one stage I was breastfeeding both at the same time and I noticed that there wasn’t much out there nutrition-wise for breastfeeding mums,” she said.

“It’s very important to eat well and get those essential vitamins and minerals in, especially when you are breastfeeding and it’s not just for your baby but for you too.

“We are often run down, tired and depleted and when it comes to everyday life mum comes last, so we need something to help us out when we are running on empty.”

When Mrs Herr was 35 weeks pregnant with her second child, she started researching breastfeeding specific products to help increase her milk production and overall nutrition before the arrival of her baby.

“I found two Australian companies, The Milk Pantry who do hot chocolate powders and shakes and Franjos who do boobie bikkies and other breastfeeding products, and as soon as I started taking them, I noticed a huge difference,” she said.

“They helped increase milk production and consistency and gave me more energy to get through the day, especially being on the go all the time.

“For the cookies all you need is just one a day to really feel the difference, they are packed with fibre and superfoods like oats, chia seeds, buckwheat, flaxseeds and they are all vegan with no preservatives.”

Mrs Herr said after successfully using the products herself, she was inspired to create a breastfeeding lactation bundle for her customers.

“For the lactation bundle, you can have a hot chocolate with a boobie bikkie on the side and I can even make it a mocha if you need a bit of coffee,” she said.

“When breastfeeding it’s important to keep the caffeine low, but one shot is fine especially if you need that extra pick me up in the morning.”

“It’s been a great hit for working mums who need to pump up their supply and get those nutrients in when pumping at work.”

Mrs Herr said she will be looking at offering more for breastfeeding mums in the future.

“I will be doing protein shakes, milkshakes and Chai soon too and see how that all goes,” she said.

“I think this is very important in today’s society, we need to offer breastfeeding mums more nutrient dense options to keep them healthy too.”

“I love seeing all my mum customers coming in and telling me how much of a difference it has made for them.”

Shot Box Café is located on Cusack Lane in Jimboomba near the Payne Bridge, and open Monday-Friday from 5:30am to 11:30am.
