We are already almost two months through 2024!
With the first weekend of March fast approaching, Clean Up Australia Day will soon be upon us.
This Sunday, 3 March, will see volunteers all around the country, getting out and about, to help keep Australia clean and beautiful.
Clean Up Australia Day was started back in 1989 by Ian Kiernan AO.
Ian took it upon himself to make a difference in his own backyard – deciding to clean up litter he was shocked to see day after day floating through Sydney Harbour.
Now, that one simple idea has become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event.
Since then, more than 21 million Australians have devoted over 38 million hours towards the environment, collecting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rubbish – an incredibly amazing achievement.
Last year alone, an estimated 760,000 Australians took part at a Clean Up Australia Day event, with over one million people helping out during the 2023 Financial Year across 17,139 Clean Up Sites.
Plastic litter dominated last year’s clean-up efforts, most being found in school grounds, bushland and parks, with soft plastics being a key focus for 2024.
Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic, hands-on way to pitch in, conserve and care for our local environment.
This Sunday morning, you can also join in the rewarding experience of helping to keep Australia beautiful.
I will be out and about with members of the Logan community, and we could always use the extra help.
There are a number of clean up events being organised in our local area on the day.
To find the one closest to you, or to register, visit the Clean Up Australia Day website to view their interactive map at, register.cleanup.org.au/join-a-clean-up.
Clean Up Kits, including reusable bags, made from 100% recycled content, will be provided to volunteers on the day.
If you are unable to participate, but are still interested in supporting the cause, you can donate to Clean Up Australia at cleanup.org.au.
I look forward to joining our amazing teams of volunteers, cleaning up right across Logan, next Sunday.
