Last week as we handed down our annual budget, one of the most challenging in many years in council, I took a moment to reflect on the work of local government right across Australia.
It’s estimated that councils are responsible for approximately 3 per cent of taxes and rates collected across Australia.
As councils, we are responsible for approximately 70 per cent of road networks, water and sewerage infrastructure, parks and gardens, libraries and much more community infrastructure that impacts the lives of every Australian.
Another thing that is often not spoken about, is the responsibility we have for shaping the future services and infrastructure for communities.
When our region hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 I want the City of Logan to be the leader of pack.
Our 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap is an exciting vision that aims to capitalise on the economic, cultural, and social opportunities that lie ahead, including the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
By embracing this roadmap, we are positioning ourselves strategically to maximise the benefits of these prestigious events and continue our progress beyond them.
One of the key milestones in our roadmap is the development of an indoor sporting venue in Logan Central.
This multi-purpose facility will be a testament to our commitment to fostering sports excellence and community engagement.
Council, in collaboration with the Queensland Government, is diligently working on a business case to bring this vision to life.
Additionally, we will advocate for crucial transport and community infrastructure improvements across the city.
The opportunities don’t just sit in the period of the games, but the future beyond 2032 and how we can shape our city.
A true legacy of these Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the opportunities and benefits for our city for many years after the games have been and gone.
