Bus boost: 190 more rides

The City of Logan’s bus network is set for a revamp that would add 190 trips weekly if approved.

Experts say it’s a “step in the right direction” following new data showing only one in 20 local residents have access to quality public transport.

The proposed changes would impact 11 routes across Logan so that the local network aligns with the Brisbane Metro services.

Certain bus routes will be cut to avoid duplication with the new “turn-up-and-go” Metro services, but 190 trips will be added.

Four existing routes will be extended to connect with Griffith University.

Earlier this month, MyCity Logan reported a new Climate Council study found Logan suburbs have the worst public transport of any capital city region in the country

The report’s co-author and analyst Ben McLeod said only one in 20 Logan residents had access to frequent, all-day public transport near their homes.

“The proposed changes are a step in the right direction, but we would like to see more buses, more often,” Ms McLeod said.

“The 190 additional trips still leave Logan residents waiting at the station compared to the same shared transport services that other Brisbane residents enjoy.

He said despite the changes, most Logan buses would still only come once an hour outside of peak hours.

“People can’t rely on a bus that only comes once an hour to meet their travel needs, so most people in Logan will remain stuck with the car as their only option,” Ms McLeod said.

“Logan’s buses need to be fast, frequent and reliable so that people in this community have a real alternative to the car.”

Acting Head of Translink Peter Milward said investing in public transport was needed as the region grows “rapidly”.

“The changes planned for Logan will deliver an uplift of almost 200 weekly trips, delivering better frequency on some routes, more buses on weekends, and better connections to Griffith University,” he said.

“For the network to be efficient, it’s important we don’t double up with Brisbane Metro services so that’s why we are changing routes with duplication and putting those services where they can better benefit the Logan community.

“It’s all about delivering greater connectivity for the Logan region and providing residents with easy, affordable and convenient public transport access.

The city’s bus operator, Clarks, said the changes were designed to complement the existing route 555 and the proposed Brisbane Metro service.

“As Logan grows our transportation network needs to evolve and these proposed changes are the first stage,” manager of finance and performance Kaylee Clark said.

“Other opportunities for improvements to the bus network include future projects such as the extension of the Southeast Busway to Springwood and the proposed Rochedale Bus Station.”

Community consultation on the plan is open until 18 August.
