Authorities have urged locals to prepare for what is expected to be a hectic storm season ahead.
With the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a wetter-than-usual summer, Logan City Council has joined emergency services in asking the community to take “simple steps” to keep safe.
These steps include:
- Understanding the risks of disasters and how they can affect your family, pets and property.
- Preparing a household emergency plan – including whether you can stay home or would need to evacuate, where you would go and what would you take.
- Preparing an emergency kit with essential supplies (food, medication, nappies, water etc) in case you lose power, water, or gas, or cannot get supplies from the shops for several days.
- Keeping your property well maintained (clean gutters, trim trees, make sure loose items are secured, etc).
Mayor Jon Raven said the local impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year showed the importance of being ready.
“For many people, it was their first experience with a cyclone,” Cr Raven said.
“But it was a good reminder that we should be prepared for extreme weather at any time.
“When you know how to keep your family, pets and property safe, you can respond faster when storms, floods and fires happen.”
Last week, the local council joined Australian Red Cross, the State Emergency Service and police is staging a mock evacuation centre at Logan West Community Centre.
Cr Raven said this training was to ensure the authorites could support the city “quickly”.
“This training is another way to make sure we can support our city quickly.”
