Aspiring Matilda shoots for the green and gold in Spain

At just 11 years old, Harmony Terare has her sights set on the green and gold – and she’s already on her way.

The young footballer has been selected to represent Australia at the Costa Blanca Futsal Cup in Spain next year, a dream step for a player whose goal is clear: to be a Matilda.

“She is very determined to be a Matilda,” her mother Sally Terare said.

“And she’s on her way – because her attitude is phenomenal.”

Harmony plays at a high level for the Rochedale Rovers and is also part of the Stretton State College Academy of Excellence.

Previously, she played for Slacks Creek Tigers.

In 2024, she was awarded the ‘Rising Star’ medal for her mixed school team, and last week took home the ‘Coaches Award’ at the school’s Night of Champions celebration.

But she has also proved to be a gun at futsal, a version of indoor soccer.

Earlier this year, Harmony competed in the Australian Futsal Association Champion of Champions Metro Titles, where she was scouted to represent Queensland at the school championships.

“Following being team captain and putting on a great show on the national stage, she has now been selected to represent Australia at the Costa Blanca Futsal Cup 2026,” Ms Terare said.

For Ms Terare, a single mother and First Nations visual artist, the achievement is as humbling as it is exciting – the cup will mark both her and her daughter’s first time overseas.

To help cover the costs of the trip, Ms Terare has organised  several fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe page and a cent auction scheduled for 7 December at Tudor Park, Loganholme.

“I’ve gotten so much positivity [from the community],” she said.

Adding a creative twist to the fundraising, Ms Terare has thought of unique way to honour the organisations who are supporting Harmony.

She calls it the “Together for Harmony” flag.

“It involves a flag Harmony will hold in Spain, and it’s a collection of local business brands who have sponsored her and helped her get there.

“It really is an opportunity to showcase and show the gratitude and appreciation that she has for local businesses.”
