Are you ready to “unretire”?

In recent years, the concept of ‘Unretirement has gained traction, marking a notable shift in how people perceive their post-retirement years.

No longer seen solely as a period of leisure, retirement has become a dynamic phase where many choose to re-enter the workforce, seeking fulfillment, financial stability, and a renewed sense of purpose.

The Unretirement trend has become particularly pronounced in the wake of Covid, with Australians across the country reassessing their retirement plans in light of evolving economic realities.

Factors such as rising living costs and a desire for supplementary income have prompted a significant number of older adults to explore opportunities for upskilling and reintegration into the workforce.

Moreover, employers are increasingly recognising the value of hiring older workers, or ‘Unretirees’, to address skill shortages and talent gaps. Contrary to outdated stereotypes, people aged 65 and above bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and reliability to the table, making them valuable assets in diverse industries and roles.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of people aged 65 and over in the labour force has increased by 11% in the past year. This trend is expected to continue as more and more older adults seek to remain active and engaged in the workforce.

One such person is John, a 68-year-old former engineer who decided to unretire and start a new career as a consultant.

“I wasn’t ready to just sit at home and do nothing,” he says.

“I still had a lot to offer, and I wanted to continue making a difference. Unretirement has given me a new lease on life, and I couldn’t be happier.”

By embracing the contributions of older workers, we can create a more inclusive, dynamic, and productive workforce that provides numerous benefits for both individuals and employers.
