Park Ridge student Amali White is taking her photography out of the classroom and onto a gallery wall, with two images selected for Logan’s annual Artwaves exhibition.
The Year 12 student uses long exposures and light painting to create her photographs, which began as a lighting folio for her Certificate II in Visual Arts.
Now they are on display at Logan Art Gallery, alongside work by young artists from schools across Logan and neighbouring areas.
“It’s great being given the opportunity to show my work,” Amali said.
It is her first appearance in Artwaves, now in its 34th year.
The exhibition features 148 emerging artists.
For Amali, photography is also a potential next step beyond school: she plans to use her skills in her older sister’s maternity photography business.
Logan mayor Jon Raven said the exhibition gave young people a chance to share their work in a professional setting.
“Whether they dream of a career in the arts or just love being creative, Artwaves gives the next generation a chance to flex their talent in a professional setting,” Cr Raven said.
Participating schools include Beenleigh, Browns Plains, Loganlea, Marsden, Park Ridge and Woodridge state high schools, alongside colleges and schools from surrounding areas.
Another exhibition running at the gallery shows where that first opportunity can lead.
Former Artwaves exhibitor Xin Weng has developed a solo exhibition, Nature of my bodies, through the gallery’s young-artist mentoring programme.
The gallery selects an outstanding Artwaves participant each year to develop work for its Young Peoples Gallery.
Both exhibitions run until Saturday 24 October. Entry is free.
Logan Art Gallery, on the corner of Wembley Road and Jacaranda Avenue in Logan Central, opens from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
