Tropical Cyclone Alfred has Logan in his sights, and weather bureau warnings are imploring people to prepare for destructive winds and potential flooding.
The Albert and Logan Rivers were both highlighted as “likely” flood risks.
As of Monday morning, the category 2 cyclone was sitting about 465km northeast of Brisbane, likely to turn west towards the Queensland coast anytime from Tuesday.
“Severe coastal hazards are likely for southern Queensland and northern New South Wales coasts,” Bureau of Meteorology warnings said.
And while a potentially damaging swell and tides were impacting coastal communities, Logan was being prepared for up to three days of torrential rain and consequent flooding.
SES volunteers were being briefed yesterday, and mayor Jon Raven said council was “hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst”.
“I cannot stress enough how important it is to prepare your home for a natural disaster,” Cr Raven said.
“Secure all loose items outside and clean up as much as you can.
“Make sure you have emergency supplies including food and water.”
Sandbags are being made available.
“Council will have self-serve sandbags available at a number of locations around the city,” Cr Raven said.
Adding to the weather misery, a heatwave warning will remain in place until Wednesday.
Weather bureau flood watch reports said potential flooding would depend on the path of the cyclone, with heavy and “intense” rainfall possible from late Wednesday.
It could continue Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, with flooding exacerbated by high seas and tides.
“Rapid river levels rises and flash flooding is expected across many creeks, associated with the heaviest rainfall with widespread, including major, riverine flooding possible,” the report said.
Premier David Crisafulli said the system could impact a heavily populated area, and included severe wind warnings.
People are being urged to stock up on bottled water, batteries and essentials in case power and water supply is impacted.
