A-plus for education investment

For the third straight year we’re set to see a school year out of the ordinary.

Back in December none of us expected this, but unfortunately the pandemic doesn’t care much for our plans.

With this current Omicron wave peaking and our school children only just gaining the ability to get vaccinated against COVID-19, it simply isn’t in the best interests of families to be sending kids to school in January.

Next week our Year 11 and 12 students will start term one via remote learning. All students will then be welcomed back the following week, from Monday 7 February.

And when our Logan kids do return to classrooms, they’ll arrive to airconditioned classrooms thanks to our government’s $477 million Cooler Cleaner Schools Program.

I’ve long acknowledged state schools are the coolest, and this is now confirmed.

It’s fantastic to see this four-year program rolling out ahead of schedule – a credit to all the tradies who have carried out the instals.

Even better, all these airconditioning systems will soon be offset by solar energy.

Our $168 million Advancing Clean Energy Schools program is set to generate 61.4 megawatts of power statewide through rooftop solar, helping us push towards our 50 per cent renewable energy target.

In total, this 2021-22 financial year, we’re investing a record $16.8 billion into education, which will see us employ more teachers, build extra classrooms, and also deliver new schools in high-growth areas, including in the Logan Reserve/Crestmead/Park Ridge areas.

The Palaszczuk Government wants to create world-class learning pathways for the young people of Logan, and support all the wonderful teachers, principals and school staff we’re so lucky to have locally.

Together we’ll make the 2022 school year a great one.
