A couple’s second wind in caravan after cancer diagnosis

LAST week, a record sale in Cornubia marked a new beginning for a local couple who have traded in their home for a caravan and life on the road.

Ten years ago, John and Megan Gebuys bought 23 Penina Circuit.

“I think we purchased it on 15 June 2015 and sold on 21 [June 2025], so almost to the day, 10 years ago, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there too,” Mr Gebuys said.

Circumstances changed for the couple two years ago when Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer.

This year, as Ms Gebuys is reaching the end of her treatment cycle, Mr Gebuys was made redundant from his job.

“We decided to pour all our energy into finishing off the home with one last renovation and putting it on the market with the opportunity to sell up and buy our dream motor home,” Mr Gebuys said.

“We’ve been caravanning for probably the last five or six years and have always spoken about hitting the open road one day.

“Earlier this year, as well, we’ve been looking at the particular sort of motorhome for a number of months, and one came on the market that we thought would be perfect.

“Everything’s fallen into place really nicely for us.”

Mr Gebuys said estate agent Darren McCosker, who sold the property via private treaty,  had been “absolutely wonderful through the whole process.”

“Darren and his team at Ray White have been fantastic all the way through.

“I don’t think we would have had the success without their support and professionalism.”

Since beginning their caravanning adventures, the Gebuys have travelled “as far north as Bowen, as far west as Lightning Ridge and as far south as Melbourne.”

Melbourne will be first on their travel agenda as the caravan is currently located there. After picking it up from the sellers and moving in, they’ll attend their son’s birthday in the Victorian city and head west to Adelaide.

Ultimately, the thrill is in the adventure, Mr Gebuys said.

“We could go to a place that’s, you know, that’s 10 or 15 minutes from home.

“It doesn’t really matter, as long as you’re out, in the open, and enjoying the environment.”
