Australia Day low key, yet an important reminder

We’ve become accustomed to an Australia Day full of barbecues, community-organised events, fun and festivity.

This year, due to yet another heightened state of Covid alert, most of the organising will be left up to ourselves.

While it remains legal to host outdoor events, it would be irresponsible for anyone to manage any sort of large-scale super-spreading get-together.

That’s why council has done the right thing and postponed a number of large events, including the official re-launch of the Kingston Butter Factory precinct and the traditional citizenship ceremony.

That said, it’s another good time for families and small groups of friends to enjoy being Australia, and to appreciate what our great country has to offer.

Whether it be a backyard barbecue, a walk in the park, a day on the beach or whatever else takes your fancy, it’s worth a moment to think about the rest of the globe, and the complexities which face many countries at this time.

We have our challenges, but we celebrate diversity, multiculturalism and equality. We embrace basic freedoms which should never be taken for granted. And we have some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in the world.

In Logan, we’ll have each other’s back during times of adversity. We have parks, waterways and are within convenient reach of the city and endless beaches.

Happy Australia Day!
