New PCYC opens after long wait

PCYC Logan’s new $14 million indoor sports centre has officially been opened after a long wait.

The new facility has been waiting to be opened for about six months, but ribbons have been cut and the complex is now ready for the city’s next generation of elite gymnasts in particular to take advantage of state-of-the-art equipment.

Cronulla Park, on the corner of Compton and Kingston Roads, has a fitness centre, gymnasium, training studio and playground.

The centre is 4700 square metres. The gym has a full-sized boxing ring, a rhythmic and artistic gymnastics hall, multi-purpose rooms with sprung floors for dancing and martial arts, an administration centre and car park for 90 vehicles.

PCYC Queensland chief executive officer Phil Schultz said it was rewarding to see their new Logan club reach completion.

“We are entering a new era with an exciting new home for PCYC Logan where we can build opportunities for young people in Logan,” Mr Schultz said.

“The PCYC is all about supporting young people and the community with innovative activities, programs, outside school hours care and more.”

Woodridge MP Cameron Dick said the PCYC meant a lot to the community.

“This is a place where friendships will be made and dreams realised, and I’m proud to have helped secure the funding to bring this project to life,” he said.

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said choosing to establish Cronulla Park as a world-class training facility for young Logan residents with an Olympic dream was the right choice.

“The venue presents a healthy and positive opportunity for aspiring Logan athletes ahead of Queensland’s transformational 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mr de Brenni said.

“It’s been four years since we chose to build facilities for young athletes instead of progressing the earmarked greyhound racing track and now we’ve secured an Olympics, it proves it was the right call for our community.”

The indoor facility is stage 1 of Logan City Council’s Cronulla Park Sports Master Plan.

“It is a wonderful outcome for the local community and an asset for the City of Logan, which will be benefit from this redevelopment for many years to come,” mayor Darren Power said.

Cr Laurie Koranski said: “Cronulla Park stands proudly alongside top-class sporting venues including Logan Metro Sports & Events Centre, the redeveloped Logan North Aquatic Centre and Doug Larsen Park just to name a few.

“It is another way we are building on our reputation as a home for sporting champions.”
