Tour de France winner gives Daisy Hill thumbs up

Cycling superstar Robbie McEwen, best known for three Tour de France green jersey victories, has given Daisy Hill mountain biking track a serious thumbs up after finishing third in a teams event with son Ewan at the weekend (August 1).

Competition mountain biking utilised Daisy Hill’s trails for the first time for the Shimano MTB Grand Prix.

“My history with Daisy Hill goes way back when I was riding my BMX bike here at Daisy Hill with my mates,” Logan boy McEwen said.

“It’s awesome to see what’s happened with mountain biking and cycling in general. Particularly the places to ride and how they’ve been developed, local councils getting behind building and expanding the trails, looking after them and making them environmentally friendly as well.”

Of the race, McEwen said: “I said, we’ll go out and have fun and do this, it’s been great to being able to come around and hand off to my son and see the look on his face when he’s put in a good lap and is handing back over to me… it’s been great being out here with him,” he said.

Mountain biking is expected to be part of the 2032 Olympic Games if Brisbane lodges a successful bid.

The Southeast Queensland bid for the Games is focused on mountain biking tracks around Toowoomba, however serious bikers are scouting a variety of venues.

More than 250 mountain bikers competed at the August 1 event.

Race director Bob Morris said: “So great to be back delivering high quality XC events again and for the first time with Rocky Trail Entertainment in Queensland. What I enjoyed most was catching up with racers and racing families who we have been friends with for many years.”

Rider Cameron Wright said it was a dusty day at Daisy Hill.

Another, Alwyn Miller, said: “Pretty loose and rocky track so I had my tyres a bit lower than normal, which seemed to pay off. No flats and only one crash for the day.”

More sporting and outdoor events are being lined up for Logan in coming months.

Among them will be Rogue Raid, at the Bayside Wake Park in Carbrook on August 29 and 30.
