Now that Premier Annastacia Palasczuk has outlined Queensland’s road map to ‘unite families’, we need to get a wriggle on in the City of Logan.
Logan residents have done an incredible job throughout this pandemic and shown great resiliency, flexibility and patience.
However those same traits won’t safeguard us from Covid-19.
With the Queensland border opening on December 17, the message is clear – get jabbed and stay protected.
This pandemic does not discriminate. As we have seen in the southern states, it can move quickly and cause havoc in communities that have been forced into lockdowns.
We don’t want this happening in Logan – especially in the lead-up to Christmas.
We want to be bringing people together, not force them apart.
Council has played a strong supporting role in assisting Queensland Health with its vaccination roll-out.
We have provided council facilities such as the Logan Entertainment Centre (LEC) and Mt Warren Sports Complex.
While this has caused some disruption and inconvenience to community and sporting groups, our priority is the safety of our community and council staff.
We are having a decent crack at vaccinations with more than 107,000 people vaccinated at the LEC in the last three months.
It’s a positive result but we need to ramp up those numbers with the December deadline approaching.
Logan is at 67% first dose and 47.3% for its second dose out of an estimated population of 257,354 (15 years plus).
We are seeing a slight improvement, up from 51.2% first dose and 32.2% for second dose on September 20.
Importantly, this represents one of the highest vaccination rates in the state in the last four weeks.
Logan should not be vax-shamed. We are an incredibly unique city with one of the most culturally diverse populations in the country.
For many, English is not their first language. This can sometimes create barriers to communication and health mandates.
But together we will continue to get through this.
