Poem to honour a friend

Here’s a poem I wrote in honour of a friend.
Why Pink
Pink inspires happy thoughts, flowers and champagne
to see it tied to sadness, goes against the grain
so why’s this pretty colour doing such a dour job
reminding us of friends we’ve lost and families who’ve been robbed?
A smiling girl, not forty, mother , daughter, friend
Suzy’s simple epitaph , “Lived life to the end”
not for her self-pity, that determined , friendly grin
seemed to say “Get lost breast cancer, you’re not going to win”
she wouldn’t want us dressed in black, so wear some pink instead
as a symbol of our hope, that a cure is just ahead.

Woodridge
