A new-look modern Springwood Mall will have 6200 cubic metres of concrete poured into its car park, enough to fill 130 average swimming pools.
The car park will have 94 new spaces and construction is well under way.
To structure and reinforce the concrete, the centre will use 86 tonnes of reinforcement bar (installed in the concrete) and around 135 tonnes of structural steel, which when combined, weighs about the same as 45 four-wheel-drives.
Powering the centre will be nearly 12.5km of electrical cable, servicing 7km of lighting circuits, more than 2km of power circuits and 3km of sub mains.
Ben Griffin is director of Geon Property, who manage the centre on behalf of owners Chin Hong Investments Corporation Pty Ltd, and said the redevelopment was a huge undertaking, with changes now starting to be visible.
“The base of our new undercroft carpark outside of Woolworths has now been created and the next stage of construction using concrete and reinforcement for the walls has begun,” he said.
“During our excavation of over 11,000 cubic metres of soil, we found an organic subgrade containing large tree roots. This suggests that vegetation was on the site prior to the creation of the original Springwood Mall (opened in 1986), which may have been part of the scrub originally owned by Logan area pioneers W Robinson and Robert Grieve (according to Logan City Council’s history).”
Woolworths and all retailers at Springwood Mall continue to trade as normal during these changes.
