San Damiano expansion ready to launch

In just its first year as a school, with just over 70 foundation students, San Damiano College at Yarrabilba is about to undergo its second phase of development.

The school began with one year level and will double in size next year when a new cohort makes its way through the gates.

Stage 2 of development, set to begin early 2022, will be a single building, maintaining the Italian-influence of design in the initial buildings.

The new building would house:

  • A technical design classroom and workshop
  • Art classroom featuring a gallery enabling display of our created art works
  • Science laboratory
  • Music, drama and dance facilities with rooms for individual practice
  • A number of other general learning areas.

Principal Peter Edwards said it was planned for construction to be completed in time to welcome the school’s first Year 9 cohort, and the third Year 7 group in 2023.

“The design of Stage 1 has provided enough capacity for us to comfortably accommodate Years 7 and 8 for 2022,” he said.

“As you may see, for the first time we are building a multi-story structure and as such it will also include a lift. Following the completion of Stage 2, it has been planned that a number of the current rooms in the Stage 1 building will be repurposed to meet our growing and diversified needs.

“This is a truly exciting phase of our on-going development, and another piece in the overall development of our college grounds.”

Mr Edwards said the funding process for Stage 2 was quite competitive, requiring the San Damiano team to detail the phenomenal current and future growth of Yarrabilba and surrounding suburbs.

“We are eagerly looking forward to the completion of these buildings which will allow the next exciting chapter of our story to continue,” he said.
