A Hindu temple at Kingston is preparing to open its doors so the Logan community can share its traditional Indian Diwali celebrations.
The Hindu denomination of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan – or BAPS for short – Sanstha Shri Swaminarayan Temple is inviting the community to attend Diwali on Friday 6 November.
This year’s Diwali is especially special for the Kingston temple, marking its silver jubilee.
A temple spokesperson said Diwali was one of the most important and joyful festivals for the Hindu community.
“Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance,” the spokesperson said.
“It is a time for families to come together, reflect on spiritual values and share happiness with others.”
The spokesperson said the temple’s role extended beyond celebrating religious festivals.
“We are committed to nurturing our youth, promoting an addiction-free lifestyle, encouraging education and leadership, and inspiring people to serve the wider community,” the spokesperson said. ”
“Diwali is a wonderful opportunity to open our doors to the wider community, share our rich Hindu culture and traditions and promote understanding, unity and harmony among people of all backgrounds.
“We hope everyone who joins us takes home a message of positivity, peace and goodwill.”
Two of the temple’s most respected swamis, Pujya Aarshpurush Swami and Pujya Brahmasmaran Swami, will lead celebrations.
Mahaprasad – food offered to the Gods and then served – will be from 6pm, with Diwali and Chopda Pujan services from 7pm on Friday 6 November.
On Tuesday 10 November, the temple will hold Hindu New Year and Annakut Arti celebrations.
Annakut, means “mountain of food” and is the offering of vegetarian dishes to the BAPS founder and deity Bhagwan. It marks the Hindu New Year and reminds devotees of the importance of faith, humility, family values and service to others.
Annakut Darshan is the viewing of the Annakut, while Annakut Arti is the hourly ritual offering of the food to Bhagwan, with the food served to attendees afterwards.
Devotees and visitors can enjoy Annakut Darshan from 10.30am to 7pm, with hourly Annakut Arti from noon to 6pm.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temple is at 45 Clare Road, Kingston.
