City’s pools earn top safety endorsement as visits surge

Four Logan pools have earned Queensland’s highest aquatic safety endorsement as the city’s swimming centres prepare for summer after recording almost half a million visits in a year.

Beenleigh, Logan North, Logan West and Gould Adams Park aquatic centres received platinum endorsement from Royal Life Saving Queensland.

The recognition requires 100% compliance across consecutive safety assessments, alongside independent checks of how pools operate.

Royal Life Saving Queensland state manager Nikki Thornhill said the result reflected consistent work behind the scenes.

“Achieving Platinum Endorsement across all participating Logan venues is an outstanding result and demonstrates a culture of safety throughout the Logan area,” Ms Thornhill said.

But she stressed the award was not a guarantee that nothing could go wrong.

“Importantly, no aquatic facility is inherently safe,” she said.

“These endorsements recognise the systems, supervision practices and operational controls that venue teams put in place every day to reduce risk and provide safer environments for the community.”

The council’s six aquatic centres recorded more than 493,000 visits in the past financial year, up 23% on the previous year.

They also delivered more than 94,800 learn-to-swim lessons.

Mayor Jon Raven said swimming remained an important part of local life.

“Swimming is a huge part of life in Logan, and it’s only getting more popular. Our pools welcomed almost half a million visits last season,” Cr Raven said.

“Whether it’s someone learning to swim for the first time or a family cooling off on a hot day, we’re providing great facilities.”

Artificial-intelligence technology is now operating at Beenleigh Aquatic Centre to help lifeguards identify swimmers who may be in distress.

The camera-based system was first introduced in Queensland at Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre in 2024.

It supports the lifeguards’ work rather than replacing their supervision.

City Venue Management operates the centres on the council’s behalf.

City Venue Management chief executive officer Jay Clarke said safety was paramount.

“Ultimately, this builds community confidence. When Logan families and swimmers visit these centres, they can feel confident they’re in a safe, well-managed facility that meets the highest standards.

“We’re very proud of our teams and the role we play, alongside the City of Logan, in delivering aquatic facilities the community can trust.”

The platinum program assesses safety management, supervision and operational performance, including through mystery-guest evaluations.

Information about Logan’s pools is available through the council’s aquatic centres directory.
