Organisers have postponed the Liberti Festival and are refunding tickets.
The celebration of African and Pacific Islander cultures was due to be held at Kingston Butter Factory this month.
Organisers intend to hold the event at a later date, which has not yet been set.
“Rather than compromise on what we promised, postponing gives us more time to go back to the drawing board, come back stronger and deliver the experience Liberti Festival deserves,” the festival update said.
People who would prefer to keep their ticket for the new date should email the organisers at support@libertifestival.com.au, otherwise tickets will be refunded.
Liberti Festival founder Innocent Onaiwu previously said she wanted to create a familial atmosphere for the festival.
“When I imagined Liberti Festival, I wasn’t thinking about a crowd — I was thinking about a feeling,” she said.
“I wanted people to arrive as strangers and leave feeling like they’d been invited into someone’s home.”
The festival started in 2021 and this was to be its fourth edition, featuring live music from both local and international artists.
More than 5000 people were expected to attend, making it the biggest Liberti Festival yet, with potential opportunities for cultural exchanges.
Along with live music, the festival was to include cultural performances, dance showcases, interactive workshops, storytelling experiences, multicultural food and market stalls.
A dedicated Sound Afrik Stage to spotlight emerging artists, workshops, community talent and live podcast sessions was also planned.
Headliners including international artists Chella, BoyPee, OSOCITY and Chris Kaiga, and local artists such as Lisi, DJ Noiz, Bina Butta, Big Noyz and Voice of Lele were to perform.
Liberti Festival was scheduled to run from 2pm-10pm on Saturday 26 September at Kingston Butter Factory.
