‘Having a go’ is in our DNA

The City of Logan has kicked many a goal on the biggest sporting arenas around the country and indeed the world.

Our rich sporting heritage has been showcased in the highest echelons of rugby league, boxing, motor racing, athletics, BMX, equestrian and even a Korean sword sport.

One of our biggest exports is rugby league legend Cameron Smith.

Before he was captain of the Mighty Maroons, the Kangaroos or even Melbourne Storm, he set the footy field alight as a dynamic hooker and five-eighth just down the road here at Logan Brothers.

This pedigree is also shared by the likes of former Brisbane Bronco Corey Parker, a tough and uncompromising lock who went on to play for his state and country.

But it’s not just the footy field where our sporting stars have shone.

When we talk about celebrating our wonderful diversity in the City of Logan, we should also mention the rich tapestry of our sporting talent.

The name Ashley Maloney might not be widely known, but he’s soon to become a household name.

The kid from Regent’s Park put the rest of the world on notice when he won the world junior decathlon championships in 2018.

In April he took out the Australian Track and Field Championships.  Now he’s off to the Tokyo to represent his country in one of the most gruelling sporting disciplines.

Or what about Clay Waterman, the unassuming student from Park Ridge who boxed his way to bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Then there’s Katie Brennan. Before booting her way into the AFLW as captain of the Richmond Football Club, she kicked her first footy aged just six in Auskick clinics at the Logan City Cobras.

The spirit of having a go is part of our DNA in Logan.

And that sporting spirit will again be celebrated at the 2021 City of Logan Sports Awards in October.

Who knows, the next Cameron, Corey, Katie or Ash could be just around the corner.
