I was extremely disappointed and concerned by the Crisafulli Government’s decision to cut almost $40 million from domestic and family violence prevention.
As the former Queensland Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, I know firsthand that prevention is one of the most powerful investments any government can make.
Prevention programs work with schools, workplaces and communities to stop violence before it starts by promoting respectful relationships, challenging harmful attitudes and supporting people early.
When prevention funding is reduced, the consequences are felt across the entire system.
More women and children are placed at risk, frontline services come under greater pressure and police, hospitals and the courts are left dealing with crises that could have been prevented.
Queensland continues to experience unacceptably high rates of domestic and family violence.
This is not the time to be winding back investment in prevention.
We should be strengthening these programs, not cutting them.
I will keep fighting for this funding cut to be reversed.
