The Logan City Historical Museum is holding a silk painting demonstration as part of its August exhibition themed “Crafts, Silk Painting, and early 1900s evening items”.
Visitors can expect demonstrations of silk painting on a scarf by artist and teacher Sue Clarke, as well as view her scarves, dolls and paintings.
Ms Clarke, who has been dabbling in the arts for more than 30 years, started her silk painting journey after attending a course in Adelaide as part of her craft group.
“I love colour. I was introduced to silk painting by just seeing how free and easy it was to work on silk, because the silk works for you with dyes, and that’s why we use different techniques to get different effects,” she said.
“It caught my eye because I was so restricted doing folk art. Every line, every stroke had to be perfect. With painting on silk, there’s no restriction. I’m just working with color, and it’s just amazing.”
Ms Clarke recalls she started exhibiting at the museum through her friendship with its media officer, Lynette Ryan, who she knew through the Brisbane Doll Society.
“I got to know Lynn when I did a stall at the Brisbane Doll Society Show in August. Lynn was president then and when she saw my dolls, and she bought one from me straight away. Now she has four of my dolls, and we just kept in contact.”
Ms Ryan said the Brisbane Doll Society would host a meet and greet after the silk painting demonstration.
“Please come along and learn something new about painting and dolls,” Ms Ryan said.
Ms Clarke says she hopes through her displays and exhibition, she can inspire and encourage others to take up silk painting.
“The reason why I like to display through the libraries is to be able to inspire others to do silk painting. What I show, I can teach. And so the people that come to me to learn my craft, my silk painting, is mostly from the libraries over the years. So hopefully, maybe I might be able to carry on [the legacy of silk painting] through my classes and exhibitions.”
The Logan City Historical Museum exhibition, “Crafts, Silk Painting and Early 1900s Evening items” runs from Thursday, 6 August to Tuesday, 29 September at the Logan City Historical Museum Heritage Centre at the Kingston Butter Factory Precinct. The silk painting demonstration by Sue Clarke is at 11am on Wednesday, 2 September a 11am, at the museum.
