There are many dangerous choices all around our young people and it’s almost a full-time job trying to keep track of them all.
But imagine a danger that is legal and can be delivered to your door 24/7 without any checks.
Nitrous oxide canisters, more commonly known as “nangs”, have become an increasing public health concern across Queensland, particularly among young people.
While the product has legitimate medical and culinary uses, a dangerous loophole continues to allow recreational users to order nitrous oxide online and have it delivered to their door at any hour of the day or night.
While it may be sometimes called ‘laughing gas’, the medical effects of its use are no laughing matter.
Regular misuse can lead to serious nerve damage, brain injury, mental health problems and addiction.
In severe cases, prolonged use has resulted in permanent disability and even death.
What is particularly concerning is the way some businesses are marketing these products.
Companies are using colourful branding, attractive packaging and bundled accessories such as balloons and straws while offering around-the-clock delivery services that make these products readily accessible.
These tactics are clearly designed to appeal to young people and normalise recreational use.
That is why I am encouraging Queenslanders to support a Parliamentary e-petition calling for stronger action to regulate the sale and delivery of nitrous oxide.
The petition calls on the LNP to ban 24/7 nitrous oxide delivery services and restrict sales.
Restricting online sales and banning 24/7 delivery services is a practical next step that will help reduce easy access while ensuring legitimate businesses can continue to obtain the product where appropriate.
Protecting the health and wellbeing of young Queenslanders should always come first.
This petition sends a clear message that the community expects stronger safeguards to prevent further harm and close the loopholes that currently exist.
I encourage everyone to sign and support this important petition.
Every signature strengthens the call for action and sends a clear message that the LNP Government must take the next step to better protect Queenslanders from the harmful recreational use of nitrous oxide.
