Opinion – Taking important steps to improve flood mapping

By Logan Mayor Jon Raven

On June 4, council will look at changing the city’s flood policy for the better.

This is an important next step to improve our flood maps and address our community’s concerns.

At a Special Council meeting last week, council decided I would write to the Queensland Government asking to change how we, and other councils, use rare and extreme flood events in our mapping.

I met with the Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie at short notice the next day to discuss the independent review of our flood study and the next steps for improving our flood mapping.

This is just the start.

We’ll continue to work for change so we can get the balance right between safety and common sense in a way that works for the people of Logan.

That’s why we’re holding another Special Council meeting on Thursday to consider improvements to our flood policy.

This follows the independent review of our biggest flood study and months of community feedback through the draft Logan Plan.

On Thursday, we have a chance to make real changes that reflect a more common sense approach to flood mapping.

We’ll be looking at several key issues.

Things like low-risk flood areas, development rules in high-flow areas, small home extensions, evacuation and isolation risks, and how we map dry creeks and minor gullies.

We’ll also look at how flood information is shown in the Logan Flood Portal and in Property Flood Reports so residents get clearer information.

This is a big moment for our city.

We’re listening, we’re acting, and we’re making sure our flood policy works for the people who live here.
