What began a decade ago as a modest “Frock Swap” in a suburban living room has blossomed into one of Logan’s best eco-fashion fundraisers.
Soroptimist International Logan’s annual “Sustainable Styles” event returns from 2pm- 4pm on Sunday, June 14 at Elements Retirement Living at Springwood.
Highlighting the vital role women play in environmental activism through this year’s theme of “Women Leading Green Futures”, the event will feature guest speakers councillor Mindy Russell of Logan City Council and Cass Gell of Sewing for Charity Australia.
Attendees can enjoy afternoon tea, participate in a raffle and browse trade tables showcasing preloved and new fashion items from local women-owned small businesses.
Proceeds from the raffle and ticket sales will go into Soroptimist International Logan projects.
In tandem with the event, the organisation has launched a targeted Facebook awareness campaign and kicked off a community recycling drive.
Members have collected items such as blister packs, paper shopping bags, can ring pulls, sheets and cookware and will provide a report as part of their World Environment Month activities.
Soroptimist International Logan treasurer and event committee member Cesarina Gigante said environmental issues were deeply intertwined with social justice.
“Climate change concerns us all, yet its effects are far from evenly distributed,” Ms Gigante said.
“Women and girls are among those most vulnerable to its impacts, and they are also among the most engaged drivers of the ecological transition,” she said.
Soroptimist International Logan was founded in 2005 and is part of a global volunteer movement for women.
In Logan, the group has provided support to agencies supporting women affected by domestic family violence, homelessness and hardship and held awareness events for International Women’s day, International Day of the Girl Child and the 16 Days campaign against gender based violence.
The group has also awarded bursaries at Kingston Learning College and Woodridge State High School.
Tickets for the “Sustainable Styles” event are $25, and raffle tickets are three for $5.
Community members can secure their tickets via Humanitix.
