Police honour DFV victims at candlelight vigils

Queensland police officers joined communities across the state last week to remember people killed by domestic and family violence.

Queensland Police Service officers attended National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day candlelight vigils on Wednesday 6 May, as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

The Logan DFV Prevention Month Candlelight Vigil was held at Griffith University Logan Campus on Wednesday 6 May, with the event organised by Centre for Women and Co to honour lives lost, stand with survivors and commit to ending domestic and family violence.

QPS Deputy Commissioner John Tims said the vigils were an opportunity to reflect, listen and reinforce a shared commitment to safety and accountability.

“Standing alongside the community at the Brisbane vigil last night was a powerful reminder of the devastating impacts that domestic and family violence has on families,” Deputy Commissioner Tims said.

Police say officers respond to more than 500 DFV-related occurrences on average every day across Queensland, which is about one every three minutes.

“Our officers work tirelessly to respond to and investigate incidents of domestic and family violence, each and every day,” Deputy Commissioner Tims said.

“But we can’t make a difference through enforcement alone. Everyone has a role to play in supporting those experiencing harm, by speaking up and reporting incidents when domestic violence behaviours occur.”

Police thanked organisers, attendees and service providers who helped create safe and respectful spaces for remembrance.

Anyone in immediate danger should call Triple Zero. For non-urgent DFV matters, police can be contacted on 131 444.
