Beenleigh pilot program links water safety with job pathways

A new program aimed at improving water safety and creating employment opportunities has launched at the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre.

The Foundations, Opportunity, Connection, Upskilling, and Swimming program, known as FOCUS, is designed to support culturally and linguistically diverse community members through English language learning and vocational training.

The initiative also aims to help address Australia’s shortage of qualified aquatic staff.

The program’s first participant, Hamidia, has already begun training towards a career in the aquatics sector as part of the Beenleigh pilot program.

The initiative is being delivered through a partnership between City Venue Management, Aqua English, AMPD Academy and Welcoming Cities, with plans for the model to expand nationally across aquatic centres and swim schools.
