I was shocked and ashamed of this nation when I read the story about Wayne at the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group when he was homeless, hungry and tired.
Worse still he had begun to lose hope.
We are a wealthy country. We have prided ourselves on being a land of compassion and fair go. But it seems in recent years that these qualities have been abandoned.
We have a housing crisis on our doorstep and yet most of our politicians are more concerned about themselves than their communities.
So it was good to see that the state government was investing in social housing but you’d have to ask why it has taken so long.
There are a lot of “Waynes” in this community who have become broke and homeless through no fault of their own – and it’s not just men.
It’s families living in cars, women and children who have fallen between the cracks. Thank goodness for services such as the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group.
But it’s time governments – state, federal and local stepped up to the plate before this gets worse.
