Green bins roll out to Logan

Waterford West resident Norman Chant has received the first green waste bin, with serial number 0000001.

Mr Chant has lived in Logan for nearly 24 years.

“It’s important to keep recycling our green waste and this bin will now make that so much easier,” he said.

He’ll be putting his grass clippings, garden prunings, weeds, palm fronds and small branches into the bin.

Items banned from the new bins include general waste, recyclables, food scraps, rocks, potting mix, soil, garden posts, hoses and ash.

Those who confirmed orders before April 25 will receive their new green waste bins over the coming weeks in time for collection services to start from Thursday July 1.

Businesses which currently collect waste have said they’ll hurt as a result of the council-offered service, and it may cost the community jobs.

But council representatives say neighbouring councils have the service and it’s time to keep up by giving people the opportunity to opt in.

Anyone who ordered a green waste bin after April 25 may not receive their bins until after July 1.

Residents do not need to be home when their new green waste bin is delivered.

Green waste bins, which have a lime green lid, will be collected fortnightly on the opposite week to recycling bins.

The green waste bin service is part of Logan City Council’s new waste contract with Cleanaway, which begins on July 1.

Although Cleanaway’s blue and white trucks will be a new look, all other aspects of wheelie bin collection remain unchanged for the majority of residents.

General waste bins will be collected on the same day each week as in the past with recycling bins emptied on that same day fortnightly.

A small number of streets in Springwood will have a change to their bins collection day. Those residents have been contacted by council.

All residents are urged to put their bins out the night before collection day, or prior to 6am on the day, to ensure they’re emptied.

The objective of the new service is to reduce landfill. New bins are being offered in three sizes – a 140-litre bin ($46 per year), a 240-litre bin ($51 per year) or a 360-litre bin ($76 per year). Up to two bins per property can be requested.

A minimum commitment of 12 months is required. Charges are added to rates for homeowners. Tenants are also able to order by paying direct.

All green waste bins have a serial number.
