A community table tennis program in Beenleigh is helping seniors stay active and socially connected, with dozens turning up each week for a friendly game.
The sessions are held at Your Lifestyle Centre from 1pm to 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.
While the games are informal, wellbeing and volunteer engagement officer Charmaine Taylor said the impact on participants’ wellbeing was significant.
The program regularly attracts between 15 and 25 players.
“It’s about keeping them active and healthy while also building companionship,” Ms Taylor said.
“It encourages them to get out of the house and connect with other people.”
Ms Taylor said table tennis was particularly suited to older residents because it was gentle on the body and adaptable to different ability levels.
“They can go at their own pace,” Ms Taylor said. “It’s not harsh exercise, but it still supports mobility and independence.”
No prior experience is required to take part in the table tennis games. Some who regularly attend the sessions have played before, but others are learning as they go.
“We’re very supportive of newcomers,” Ms Taylor said. “If someone hasn’t played before, others are happy to show them what to do.”
Games are rotated so participants mix with different players throughout the afternoon. And a scheduled tea break in the middle of each session allows time for conversation off the court.
“It’s not just about the game,” Ms Taylor said. “They sit down, have a cuppa and a chat.”
“That social connection is really important.”
While the focus is on participation and enjoyment, she said there was still a competitive edge.
“There’s a lot of cheering,” Ms Taylor said. “They do get quite competitive at times.”
Sessions cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members, and are open to seniors in the local community.
