High school students receive help to cover uni costs

Mitchell Dixon is one of ten recent graduates in Logan to receive $5000 to help cover uni resource costs.

Mr Dixon will be attending The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus for the next few years while he completes his Bachelor of Engineering/Master of Engineering degrees.

Mr Dixon’s high school, Canterbury College, Waterford, encouraged students to apply for the council-run program, which provides recent high school graduates with $5000 over 3 years to help cover university costs.

“I decided at the start of year 11 that I wanted to do engineering because I liked physics and maths,” Mr Dixon said.

“I ended up having to do biology in year 12, and that made me realise I want to do something in the health industry.

“I found out, through a pathway, that I could specialise in mechanical and then major in biomedical engineering, to create robotic equipment that will help people.”

Mr Dixon, who lives in New Beith and will turn 18 next month, said he was excited to start his coursework and participate in university life.

“I hope it’s a bit of a challenge,” he said.

“I’m excited to see my friends and make some new ones.

“I’ll also partake in some of the ensembles they have there.”

A few of Mr Dixon’s friends will also be studying a Bachelor of Engineering at The University of Queensland this year, but may specialise in other areas, he said.

“I’m going to use the bursary for uni resources like textbooks and stationery.

“So it will just help me stress less about having to work as much to be able to afford everything.

I honestly had no clue what my chances were of getting the bursary, so it was a nice surprise.”

Mayor Jon Raven said the City of Logan Tertiary Educational Bursaries program would help local students pay for resources like textbooks and technology.

“When you walk out of the school gates for the last time, there’s a lot of uncertainty about what the future might bring,” Cr Raven said.

“We’re proud to get behind those who’ve enrolled in a degree with some financial support.

“It’s important they start out on the right foot with things like textbooks and technology, so they can focus on what really matters.”
