LOGAN City Council is monitoring a “concerning increase” in cases of a contagious and potentially fatal viral illness affecting dogs.
The illness, canin parvovirus (parvo), primarily impacts puppies and older unvaccinated dogs.
With symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy, parvo spreads through contact with infected faeces or through contaminated surfaces like shoes and dog bowls.
A council spokesperson said it can spread easily in public environments such as parks and footpaths.
“The virus is extremely resilient and can survive in an environment for years, making containment and control difficult,” the spokesperson said.
“Dog owners are encouraged to ensure their pets are vaccinated and to remain vigilant for signs of illness.”
The Animal Welfare League Queensland advises dog owners to prioritise vaccinations.
