New Beenleigh: Storm before the calm?

BEENLEIGH is a hive of development activity, roads being built, the community space being rejuvenated, a new 7-storey building about to finish construction, and other inner-city developments awaiting detail.
More attention is arguably being put into Beenleigh than any other business centre in Logan.
The question some are asking is whether it will work.
Property Hub commercial agent says the phone has been running hotter since The York building started to near completion.
He says businesses that once would have looked elsewhere have shown interest in Beenleigh.
Works on the shade sail in Beenleigh Town Square is scheduled to be completed mid-July, and an event is planned in conjunction with the space re-opening.
Beenleigh night markets and family movie screenings are set to resume, with a view to adding life to the district and attracting families.
Local businesses see the future, but they’ve also been critical of the communication from council about roadworks.
One business said they heard about the current work the day it started.
“A bit of warning would have been nice,” he said.
Work along Main Street and John Street is set to be finished for the end of July, while stage two along City Road and John Lane is scheduled to begin in August, finishing late September.
“I’m eager for the community to see the finished project,” Cr Karen Murphy said of the Town Square art.
“Plans are well underway for the first free community event where the residents will have the chance to view the vibrant and creative artwork.”
Artwork includes the “Tree of Life” mural which Cr Murphy says will get a protective spray to ensure it doesn’t disappear.
Designs from four City of Logan artists – Mary Barron, Madhu Khanna, Kyra Mancktelow and June Hintz – have been included on the discs that are being strung across the town square.
Other designs by Ms Barron and Ms Mancktelow will be incorporated as street prints in Main and George streets, City Road and John Lane.
There will be a mural on the outside of The York.
Details of the new Savages Arcade in the middle of the CBD are still being worked through.
The York’s developers announced last week that the building had topped out, meaning it was now as high as it would get.
There are now 26 trades, more than 100 construction workers and 16 apprentices at the site which will have 4660 square metres of commercial space including four SoHo apartments, retail space and an underground carpark.
As the first major commercial office development in the area in a decade, Alder Developments general manager Greg Tupicoff says the Logan business community is anticipating the project’s completion later this year.

“The project teams have been working hard to see this significant project come to fruition. Now this construction milestone has been achieved the removal of the scaffold will begin as the internal fit-out and works on the building’s facade are completed.”

While most people aren’t keen to go on the record, many will say quietly that the proof of success won’t lie with the infrastructure now being finalised.

Rather, it will lie with the businesses themselves, and how much developers and private enterprise are prepared to invest in the “new” Beenleigh.
