Construction begins on new special school in Berrinba

Early construction works have begun on a new special school in Berrinba set to relieve current enrolment pressure on local schools.

The state government announced that more substantial construction on the primary school, which will be located next to Berrinba East State School, will begin before the end of the year.

Stage one (of three) has received full funding and includes two two-storey buildings with 34 classrooms in each, sports and playing facilities, and an additional two-storey administration building with a resource and information centre and a tuckshop.

A multi-purpose hall fitted with specialist music and art spaces and a green space, and a playground, central to the school’s buildings, is also included in stage one of construction plans.

Stage two, which is funded and includes the construction of a staff car park, and stage three, the only stage currently unfunded, which will include proposed future buildings on school grounds, of the school’s development plans, is awaiting town planning approval.

Consultation sessions on stages two and three are open to community members and will be held from 2.45pm to 3.45pm on Wednesday, 15 October, at Berrinba East State School and from 3pm to 4pm on Thursday, 16 October, at Logan City Special School.

Locals can also submit feedback about Berrinba’s new special school on Queensland’s Department of Education website until Friday, 24 October.

Factors such as traffic, surrounding nature, and stormwater impacts will be considered in the approval process for stages two and three.

The Queensland Department of Education said it would stage the introduction of year levels when the school opens in 2027.
