‘Quieter’ drones in Wing expansion

Logan’s golden child when it comes to innovation, Wing drone delivery, has now done more than 18,000 deliveries in pilot suburbs Crestmead, Berrinba and Marsden.

Now, and with a mission to address noise complaints, the service is set to expand to 12 suburbs.

Wing head of policy and community affairs Jesse Suskin said the company had heard community feedback regarding noise and overflight of drones in the neighbourhood.

“And we are committed to making improvements in response to their feedback,” Mr Suskin said.

“Today, we’re excited to be announcing the rollout of our new aircraft in the Logan community, a quieter drone model that almost halves the sound level experience during overflight. We’ll be introducing the quieter drone model into service gradually in the coming weeks.”

Mr Suskin said demand for contactless delivery explode by more than 500% during Covid-19.

“In 2021, use of our delivery service in Logan has continued to grow,” he said.

“We’ve made more than 18,000 deliveries to the Logan community, with more than 1000 deliveries in just a few days during the most recent Queensland Covid-19 lockdown period, prior to the Easter long weekend.”

The service will now expand to parts of Loganlea, Waterford West, Slacks Creek, Logan Central, Woodridge, Kingston, Park Ridge, Browns Plains, Heritage Park, and Regents Park.

“In the coming weeks we’ll also be expanding even further to include service for customers in Edens Landing, Bethania, Holmview, Waterford, and Beenleigh,” Mr Suskin said.

“As Wing expands, we’ll continue to improve our service’s ability to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

“This includes expanding our merchant and product offering, providing service beyond residential locations when and where customers need it, and making adjustments to our drone aircraft to increase our delivery range and provide noise mitigations for the community.”

Blackout Coffee has joined as a merchant, offering salads, sandwiches and baked good via drone.

Hardware has been popular as have small grocery items.

“Additionally, as more Logan residents returned to working from the office, we’ve started delivering to workplaces so that staff from selected local businesses in Logan can now access the convenience of drone delivery at work, Mr Suskin said.
