A recurring outdoor movie night at Hillcrest, popular with local families, is fast becoming a community staple.
Brad Eastall first held the event, called Movies Under The Wineglass, because of its proximity to the Hillcrest wineglass water tower, just after COVID.
Ever since, it has run several times a year, mainly on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Halloween.
Typically, the event will attract more than 100 people. At its biggest, there were about 250 locals watching.
Now, Mr Eastall has plans to make the event even bigger and hopefully create something that lasts for generations.
“We need volunteers to make this work and get bigger and bigger. I have big plans for it to be epic,” he said.
“I want all the kids to be able to look at the Wineglass tower as they drive by and remember movie nights.
“I want families to come out for the event and be able to just sit down and watch a movie.
“Eventually, I want it to have a few more activities before the movie, because I did have a jumping course at one stage – it was like a big obstacle course. That was also with council funding, but council funding can’t really fund every event.”
Mr Eastall is looking to fund future events through business advertising.
“But to get businesses to support it, it has to obviously do well and have a majority of people that go there all the time,” he said.
“I have some on board already, which is great.”
The next movie night is on Friday, 5 September, over the Father’s Day weekend, with a screening of A Minecraft Movie.
Like usual, the event will also include showbags and sausage sizzle raising funds for the Browns Plains Bluelight Disco.
The final screening of the year will be on 1 November, just after Halloween.
This event will be a double feature, including Hotel Transylvania 2 and Jurassic World, both of which are turning 10 years old this year.
