Logan Motorway upgrade to slash congestion, cut travel times

The Queensland Government and Transurban Queensland have unveiled plans for a major upgrade to a 10km section of the Logan Motorway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

The project proposal includes a new lane in each direction, upgrades to on and off-ramps, and the introduction of smart motorway technology to enhance safety and efficiency.

The Logan Motorway, a key freight route connecting hubs like Brisbane Airport and the Port of Brisbane, handles around 210,000 trips daily.

The proposed upgrades aim to reduce travel times by up to 20 minutes during peak hours by 2031, and remove approximately 6,100 vehicles from local roads each day.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said, “This congestion-busting project proposal will improve freight productivity and will ensure the estimated 210,000 trips made on the Logan Motorway get to their destination safer and sooner every day.”

Key aspects of the proposal include adding new lanes between the Centenary Motorway and Mt Lindesay Highway, upgrading the Formation Street Interchange, and installing smart motorway systems.

No additional toll increases for regular motorists, including cars, utes, and motorcycles, are planned as part of the upgrade.

Transurban Group CEO Michelle Jablko highlighted the economic importance of the project.

“The Logan Motorway supports the movement of over $1.0 billion of freight each day and is a key transport corridor across South-East Queensland,” she said.

“This project will cater for future growth by significantly reducing travel times on a vital Brisbane freight route, improving road safety and supporting the area’s sustainable development.”

Pending approval, the project is expected to be completed before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Community feedback will help shape the final design, and ongoing discussions with industry stakeholders.
