A little driving help goes a long way

More licensed drivers are needed to help disadvantaged young people achieve their 100 logbook hours of learner driving.

Braking the Cycle is a statewide program running out of the PCYC at Crestmead and is designed to help people get their licence – young people who might otherwise never be able to get their hours to a point they can qualify for a driving test.

Peter Embrey, who volunteers in the program, says the driving is just one aspect of the program – it’s so much more than that.

Driver mentors help young people with confidence, communications and other life skills.

“Some of the people in the program have been able to connect the young people with jobs, and sometimes to help them through tough times,” Mr Embrey said.

Mr Embrey joined the program after he was told by police recruiters he’d have a better chance of becoming an officer if he did some volunteer work.

Now, he doesn’t want to be a police officer any more. Rather, he’s become a driving instructor and loves being able to help steer young people through the process of learning to drive.

“It not only helps people get their licence,” he said. “It helps improve communication skills, and helps the young people take responsibility for their own success. It’s great when youth from disadvantaged background really show up and give it their best shot.

Program coordinator Julie Stark said volunteers are given the use of two cars. Volunteers will be subject to background checks, including a blue card.

The program is currently helping about 25 young people but Ms Stark says she’d like to be in a position to help more than 40. The minimum commitment is as little as one hour per week and hours are flexible.

Learners aged 16-25 are required to have 10 hours of driving under their belt before they join the program.
