A comedic recovery, Steve Hughes arrives in Logan

Funny man Steve Hughes is back on his feet and will play his first ever gig in Logan on Friday, 27 June.

The Australian comedian had planned to perform in Logan last month but was forced to reschedule due to a health emergency.

Mr Hughes underwent open heart surgery in November last year after checking into a hospital emergency department.

“I expected to get it sorted and be out ready to do the show the next day. But unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” he said

Mr Hughe’s stand-up show, Sheer Heart Attack, will talk about the surgery and his recovery.

In the past, Mr Hughes has stayed away from mining his personal life for comedy material.

“I always did comedy about what was going on in the world, it wasn’t about my personal life. Sometimes it [the material] wrote itself, now it’s quite a crazy time that we live in.”

Since beginning his career, Mr Hughes said the comedy landscape had changed just as the world has.

“There’s a mass transformation of consciousness going on and shifting into an entirely new way,” Mr Hughes said.

He said that, generally speaking, in Western countries and in online spaces, opinions have become a tool for division. But, Mr Hughes argues opinions are subjective and we should be exposed to a wide range.

“Why can’t you be offended? That’s the whole part of having a liberal democracy that you have to hear things you don’t agree with,” he said.

“I may disagree with a man, but I’ll fight to my death for his right to say it.”

Later this year, Mr Hughes will feature in Jim Jeffries and Friends, a comedy special to be broadcast on the Seven Network.

Mr Hughes and Mr Jeffries were previously roommates in the United Kingdom. Mr Hughes lived in the UK for close to two decades.

“It was great to see Jim and lots of the other comics that were on,” he said.

Comedians Chris Wainhouse, Katie Wainhouse, Nikki Osborne, and others will feature in the special too. Mr Hughes said working with a group of comics is, perhaps unexpectedly, a different experience to his solo stand-up shows and an experience that he’d missed.

You can see Mr Hughe’s show Sheer Heart Attack at Fitzy’s in Loganholme from 6pm on Friday, 27 June.
