Eyes on the premiership for Jimboomba

Jimboomba Cricket Club is riding high after securing the minor premiership in the Gold Coast Premier division 3 competition, cementing their place as one of the top teams this season.

With a strong campaign behind them, the team is now setting its sights on the ultimate prize, the premiership.

Club captain Rob Fitzgerald expressed his pride in the team’s efforts throughout the season.

“This is a huge achievement from a club perspective. Last season was more of a rebuilding phase, with a lot of juniors coming through from the junior divisions into the seniors,” he said.

“We only won two games all season, so we built on that at the start of this season by bringing in a few older heads to balance the side, and it has really paid dividends.”

Mr Fitzgerald said Jimboomba’s path to the minor premiership was marked by consistent performances, key individual contributions, and a strong team culture.

“It’s all about understanding game plans and what we want to achieve. It’s no use setting a field and then bowling something that doesn’t suit the field placement,” he said.

“Similarly, when batting, it’s about not getting bogged down by good bowling but finding ways to keep the scoreboard ticking. These are the learnings I’ve been trying to pass on to the younger guys.”

As the finals approach, preparations are in full swing.

The team remains focused on fine-tuning their game plan and ensuring they bring their best performance to the knockout stages.

“We aren’t changing our approach now just because it’s finals. The communication and mindset remain the same,” he said.

“If we follow the processes we’ve been using all season, the results will take care of themselves.”

Despite finishing the regular season on top, Mr Fitzgerald acknowledges that the finals will be a fresh challenge, with every team eager to claim the premiership.

They take on cross town rivals Logan Village for a shot at the premiership.

“They’re a strong team that we’ve beaten twice this year,” he said.

“They were understrength the first time, but the second match was a hard-fought win. Finals are a different ballgame, so we know we have to be at our best.”

Mr Fitzgerald said a premiership win would mark a significant achievement for the club and a testament to the hard work put in by players throughout the season.

“Winning would be amazing, but we focus on enjoying our cricket and each other’s success,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“Whether we win or lose, it’s about taking ownership, playing in the moment, and enjoying the game.”
