If you struggle to touch your toes but have no problem cuddling puppies, then puppy yoga might be just what you need.
Inna Essence, a local Pilates and yoga studio, is introducing puppy yoga – a unique and increasingly popular wellness trend that combines gentle movement with playful pups.
Puppy yoga sessions are set to be a hit with locals looking for a fun and relaxing way to unwind.
Andrea Creighton, co-owner of Inna Essence, shared that puppy yoga is not just about yoga but also about bringing joy and relaxation to participants.
“How can you do yoga with puppies and not smile?” she said.
“If you can, you might have a heart of stone.”
Puppy Yoga Sydney, which has been running similar events in New South Wales, is expanding to Brisbane due to its popularity.
The organisers ensure all puppies come from ethical breeders, personally visiting them to confirm the dogs are raised in safe, loving environments.
The puppies, typically seven to eight weeks old, are vaccinated and chosen for their friendly temperaments.
For participants, puppy yoga offers both physical and mental health benefits.
Studies show that interacting with animals can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol while increasing serotonin and oxytocin, which are linked to happiness and relaxation.
Combined with the gentle stretching and mindfulness of yoga, it’s a perfect recipe for stress relief.
“There’s something so soothing about being around puppies. It’s an instant mood booster,” Mrs. Creighton said.
“You can feel the stress melt away as soon as you walk in and see those wagging tails.”
Each session is led by a qualified yoga instructor, and participants won’t need to bring anything – yoga mats and, of course, the puppies are provided.
The format is simple: attendees settle into the space, and then the puppies are released into the room, free to roam, play, and even nap on unsuspecting yogis.
Mrs. Creighton said puppy yoga is a great way for people to try yoga in a fun and non-intimidating environment.
“A lot of people want to try yoga but worry they’re not flexible enough or strong enough,” she said.
“This takes away that pressure. It’s about having fun and enjoying the company of these little pups.”
The sessions are open to anyone aged 13 and over, and no prior yoga experience is required.
Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just looking for an excuse to play with puppies, puppy yoga promises to be a unique and enjoyable experience.
Spots are still available for their 16 March event.
